New Chitose Airport, Japan: A wonderland for kids!

I think this is the first time I’m writing about an airport…. But my goodness, this is worth the write-up, so take a look!
Our trip to Japan for our first skiing holiday saw us flying into Sapporo, which I was expecting to be a fairly small place, but I have never been so wrong! It has just about everything imaginable and is literally every small child’s dream come true!

On arriving at New Chitose Airport we had a little time to kill before our organised transfer to the hotel so we thought we’d have lunch. The selection of food was really great with numerous places to stop and eat. Individual restaurants lined the airport but also lead us to a food court with a small soft play area, which is handy if you’ve got very young little ones. From western food including a sandwich corner, pasta store and the usual Starbucks, to Chinese food, Japanese food, and an organic Café, you will surely find something to your fancy!

Just opposite the food court there is a Sky Museum that the little ones enjoyed going in (for free) to learn about aviation. They’ve played airhostess, had a go on a simulator, and had a nice walk around the display of mini planes!

There’s also an observation Deck (unfortunately closed in winter from December to March) but this gives great views and would be fab for any mini plane spotter! With the corridors of the arrivals hall being filled with massive cuddly toy displays and lots of things for kids to look at, I have to say we were nicely impressed by what we found….. But it was when we came back for our return flight that the real fun began and gave me the true inspiration for this post!

After an amazing week spent in Niseko (more to follow on that in a blog coming you way very soon!) our airport transfer got us in a little more than two hours before our flight and we were the first in the queue to check-in, so the whole process only took a matter of minutes!

Seriously the place was deserted! Then the wandering started, and honestly speaking, if ever there was an airport that I wouldn’t mind being stranded in with my family, it’s this one!

While there are the obligatory Hello Kitty shops, this is just the beginning of your journey down what they have called “Smile Road”.

I expected the toy shops, and it was nice to see not one, but a couple of playgrounds and soft play areas for the kids, but then we continued our walk and it was just never ending as you pass along the connecting passage which takes you between the arrival and departure halls.

Hello Kitty has her own cafe, a rather posh affair, with colourful lamps on tables, pictures on the wall, and curries served with rice in the shape of Kitty herself!

Doraemon (the Robot Cat for those of you unfamiliar with this Japanese character!) has his own Sky Park, arcade and café, but also has a wonderful library and workshop which is a beautiful little haven where you can read books for free or do some arts & crafts with multiple tables set up accordingly to welcome the little ones.

I lost count of the number of Entertainment Zones with themed attractions inside that we passed by and if I’m honest, I don’t even know what some of them were but the choice was amazing and we simply didn’t have time to try everything!

Again Hello Kitty had her own Happy Flight Centre where you travel around the world greeted by lots Little Kitty characters depicting airhostesses!

All the coffee shops were geared towards the younger travelers making it difficult to choose just where to stop and enjoy. But, the second part of the airport is dedicated to Royce’s Chocolate Factory; a phenomenon in itself!

The famous Sapporo chocolate has its production line on display for all to see behind a glass walkway. See robots and machines moulding treats, and then see the Royce experts finishing off the delicacies before arriving in the shop.

While the shop is lovely and you can pick up novelty items as well as bars and boxes of this famous Japanese brand, it’s their bakery that nearly knocked me off my feet! Never have I seen so much chocolate infused into a patisserie selection as they have done here! I put on a kilo just looking at the sheer wonders before me.

Only the Japanese could take the concept of a ‘pain au chocolat’ and give it a revamp that is so original and so overloaded with chocolate, that you wonder if it’s really possible to finish in one sitting. AMAZING!

So not only could you do with an extra hour or so to be able to truly dive into the children’s wonderland that they’ve created, but ALL this is before you’ve even passed by the control with your boarding passes! I will add that as you are doing all this before heading to Duty Free and your departure gate, do keep an eye on the time! It would be very easy to get carried away and then get stuck in a queue at the final security check!

And there you have it, an overview of the New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, Japan. If you’re not travelling with children, you may feel a little out of place but fear not, there’s a cinema (Japan’s first movie theatre in an airport), a nail salon, and an impressive Onsen in the domestic terminal which gives you access to hot springs, open air baths, relaxation rooms and more.

My children are already asking to go back next year so it looks like our skiing holiday may become an annual thing, certainly while we’re living in Asia. So next year, on that last day when you have to leave the hotel and everyone’s sad that a week of wintersports has come to an end, there’ll be a little glimmer of hope as we drive to the airport…knowing that there’s a good couple of hours more fun to be had! You probably know by now that I love seeing new ideas coming to KL, and I love it even more when great initiatives offer to share their expertise with others for FREE!

Flight Experience KL: making mini pilots’ dreams come true!

Got a little wannabe pilot at home?! I have just the thing for you!

This is the centre you are looking for on the second floor of Pavilion KL

Nestled away in Pavilion KL, is the ‘Flight Experience’; a real Boeing 737 flight simulator that allows little ones to fulfill their dreams of piloting an airplane, and taking the Captain’s seat in this very unique experience!

For anyone under the age of 12 with a passion for flying, this is the place to go!

Situated on level 2 of the shopping mall, I have been passed this centre before and often wondered if this would be suitable for children, and the answer is most definitely ‘YES’!

Learn about aviation through hands on experience in the cockpit with a fully qualified instructor.

They have a fabulous ‘Junior Jet Flight Programme’ all overseen by a qualified instructor who will introduce them to the wonderful world of aviation, and let them have a go at performing landings and take-offs in the most amazing looking simulator, that comes with 180 degree wraparound view and sound effects!

Coming in for a landing at KL, but if you prefer you can choose Paris, London or New York! in fact there are over 24,000 airports to choose from!

If I’m honest, I’m thinking most adults would love this too, but with a specific children’s programme for the under 12s and birthday party options also available, I’m thinking it could become quite the family affair! Looks like my son now has somewhere else to put on his to-do-list (and I may just have a go too!). For bookings and flight experience options check out their website (https://kualalumpur.flightexperience.com) or FB page. Have a safe flight 😉 S x

Still no plans for today and wandering what to do?Why not head over to ‘Marmalade’ for their story-telling event that starts at 12.30? The ‘Silly Stupendous Spectacular Stories Session’ will keep little ones busy with songs, rhymes and stories, all under the careful watch of the team from the Julia Gabriel Centre.

FREE Guided Tours unlocking the history of KL

FREE guided tours are now being offered at Kuala Lumpur City Gallery!
This great initiative provides English-speaking professionals to take you around the gallery (located at the infamous ‘Merdeka Square’) giving you an overview of KL and it’s amazing history as well as answering any questions you may have.

There are three time slots daily at 10.30am, 11.30am, and 14.30am, all of which last approximately 45 minutes. While you don’t need to register in advance, they do suggest turning up a little bit in advance to avoid disappointment.

Entry to the gallery itself costs just 5RM BUT you are given a voucher worth 5RM redeemable in their gift shop downstairs so you can take home a little souvenir of your visit, be it a bookmark, key ring, or any of their I ❤️ KL iconic treasures. That makes the whole experience basically free!

A view of the KL City model before you are taken on a fab little journey accompanied by flashing lights and music!

Definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in learning more about this amazing city. If you go before the end of the month, their Batik exhibition is still in place, but our favourite part is the ‘Mini KL sound & light show upstairs which is great for the whole family!

The Mini KL sound and light show…. when the city lights up!

While in the area, take the time to take in the colonial side of the city and don’t forget to take a souvenir photo in front of the ‘I ❤️ KL’ monument! S x

Located just outside the entrance to the KL City Gallery – get your cameras ready!

The new Cafe/Bistro for families in Kuala Lumpur!

Brand NEW, in KLCC and child-friendly…. This is a little gem that I need to tell you about!

Ra.Ft Café’/Bistro only opened it’s doors to customers at the end of last month but they’re already building themselves quite the reputation.

Perfectly located at Binjai 8 (off Persiaran KLCC) this spacious cafe serves up their very own home-roasted coffees, an array of mixed juices, and a healthy menu of cold and hot dishes that will have you coming back for more.

While a new hangout is always nice to see, what I love more than words can say is just how family-friendly this cafe is! The fact that the little ones have their very own, (discretely positioned) play zone, gets them so many points with all us parents, allowing us just a bit of downtime while little hands are kept busy playing!

Equipped with cuddly toys, a television, blackboard and even a game of hop scotch, this has to appeal to anyone who has ever tried to dine with children and I can’t wait to try it out! This really does look like a lovely addition to KL, so if you pass by, feel free to let us know how it was! S x

Healthy Baby Food Pouches hit KL- SquEEEze me Baby!

SquEEEze Me Baby!

Okay, firstly I love the name!

Secondly, I love the concept behind these baby food pouches!

A KL mum who set out wanting the very best for her own baby decided she was going to cook everything from scratch for her little one; with organic imported fruits and veg, no sugar added, and no preservatives. Wanting to share her healthy eating habits with other parents she cleverly created ‘SquEEEze Me Baby’ and as a lady after my own heart, I thought I’d give her a little shout out today!

With her first shop opening in 1Utama and now a second store in Great Eastern Mall, you really do need to pop by!

The fresh interiors are very welcoming but what is also so appealing is the ‘Baby Bar’ with perfect seating for tots, and also a little play area!

From the 1st to the 22nd of March ‘SquEEEze Me Baby’ will also be down at Avenue K so make sure you stop by for a little taster of something fresh and healthy! By all means check out their FB page and look at for special promos and events! S x
